Evaluation: Judge Mathis received quite positive ratings from both attorneys and non-attorneys. Attorneys rated him highly for maintaining proper control over the proceedings, being attentive to the proceedings, and displaying familiarity with cases through prior preparation. In fact, the survey results among attorneys showed that Judge Mathis improved in all areas since his last evaluation in 2005. Among court staff, he received high ratings for being punctual in commencing proceedings, respecting all court employees, and for maintaining appropriate hours given the workload. Among the resource staff (e.g. law enforcement officers, social workers, etc.), Judge Mathis was rated well for maintaining proper control over the proceedings and for ruling on motions or cases in a timely manner. There were no specific areas of weakness or concern.

Experience & Education: Judge Mathis has served as a district judge since 1992. He presides over a diversified docket and hears both civil and criminal cases. Judge Mathis is the Chief Judge of the Fourth Judicial District. In 1997, he received the Outstanding Las Vegan Award from the Hispano Chamber of Commerce. Judge Mathis received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University and law degree from the University of New Mexico School of Law.
