Prior to being elected to the bench, Judge Mitchell was in private practice for approximately 24 years, practicing in the areas of general civil practice with a focus on real estate and business law, estate planning, and probate. He worked as a contract public defender and contract Children's Court (children and respondents') attorney. Judge Mitchell graduated from the University of New Mexico School of Law in 1984.
